the ned rig is one of the latest techniques to put bass in the boat but even many seasoned professional anglers are behind the curve. elite series angler and know that many of my competitors are not using it. the ned rig is used most proficiently with spinning tackle. because of the way you fish it (more on that next), spinning gear allows for longer casts and better line management during the retrieve. a quality spinning reel in the 2500 or 3000 size range is best. running a 10- to 15-pound braid main line to a 8- to 10-pound fluorocarbon leader is the way to go. my leader is usually 15 to 20 inches long and made of 8-pound sunline sniper. the longer leader helps the lighter bait cast further. the ned rig is a short, compact soft-plastic bait threaded on a light jig head. this is the big difference: you don’t drag a ned rig on the bottom.
using those lighter jig heads is key to keeping the bait just above or just touching the bottom as it glides back to you. lighter weights are anywhere in the 1/32- to 1/8-ounce range. now that we know the tackle and the concept of how to fish it, the final step is getting the feel of it. the feel is the part that i am still getting down and i have been using the ned rig for years. i can keep track of that size weight all the way down to 10 or 12 feet deep with a missile baits ned bomb on the back. the rate of fall will often dictate the bite rate so don’t be afraid to go to a faster fall at times, which you could get with a 1/8 ounce. again, the feel will be different with that heavier weight so you will have to adjust to feeling that bait go through the water column and just ticking the bottom. since long time outdoor writer, ned kahde, introduced the world to the technique, the ned rig has caught thousands of bass for him and many others. ned still calls it the midwest finesse rig but it is too late, the bass fishing world knows it as the ned rig. we are a participant in the amazon services llc associates program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to amazon.com and affiliated sites.
the ned rig has been around for a few years and has recently been taking off as the go-to bait whenever the bass seem finicky. i would like to share with you some observations from my use of the ned rig over the last couple years. the trd is made out of elaztech, which makes this bait nearly indestructible. ok, so now that you know what the ned rig is, let’s talk about how to fish it. basically, all you do is throw it out, let it sink to the bottom and drag it back. it is best fished with a 7-foot spinning rod, medium light action with a soft tip. a medium light action rod telegraphs bait movement along the bottom extremely well. the slow fall of the bait is designed to work best with mono. to visualize what i mean, fill a cup or bowl with a few inches of water and drop the ned rig in it. add trd baits to the jig and the result is an appearance of an imitation of a small baitfish, sculpin or goby in a natural feeding posture with its nose down on the bottom.
furthermore, the elasticity of the trd transfers to the bait an irresistible quivering, shaking and undulating movement bass can’t resist. it has a tendency to pull down on the hook often. i will use a drop of super glue on the head where it meets the bait thus avoiding this tendency. i use the ned rig most often down soft sloping rocky points, along the break of a ledge, around gravely underwater humps or over flats with sparse vegetation. the nature of the trd bait is such that it is not friendly towards other soft plastic baits. if you don’t, the trd will melt and meld with your other baits and you will have a very gooey mess. i have had the most success with the worm imitating baits, especially the 3-inch finesse trd. if the bass are actively feeding, i don’t need a finesse technique and use other baits. i have many angler friends who are now catching big bass with the ned rig. the club is involved in a variety of angler education and fisheries enhancement activities.
