medical officer canadian forces reddit

after reading on the canadian forces website about medical officers, i know this is what i want to do with my life. it says that the forces will pay for me to go to medical school, but i’m not sure if the application process is different then. also, i am interested in psychiatry, and it says on the website that medical officers may apply to specialize their medical practice, but if i went to med school for a degree in psychiatry, could i enter as a psychiatrist? i’ve talked to my parents about it and my mom is really against it. honestly, i will try as hard as i can to do this with my life, whether or not she is okay with it. just to be clear, unless there are mitigating circumstances you’re dealing with, there are few major banks in canada that won’t offer $125k + line of credit if you show them an acceptance letter to a canadian medical school… once you have that letter they are well aware of your future earning power and ability to pay it back in 7-12 years. they love med students… only to say that application to the military as a medical officer for financial reasons is a mistake.

if you get into med school the last thing you need to worry about is paying for it. the motp plan is very generous but doing it for the money is not a good idea – there are better and easier ways to pay your way than giving 5 years of your life to the cf. as for psych, after you finish the 3-4 years of med school you get your md but you need to do a residency before you are qualified to work. most specialities, including psych, are 5. i believe that generally you are obligated to specialize in family initially and work for the cf for 5 yrs before you can do specialty training. then after doing specialty training you will owe the cf more time if they are paying for it.. yeah i’ll be honest. no one really expects you to be military like. no one wants a soldier out of you, they want a doctor.
