i got to fish it as a prototype and have caught fish on it during all seasons of the year all over the west. i love to fish this fly as a dropper under a dry as well as in a nymph rig. in a move that might amount to heresy, i even tie this fly on a size 8 hook with a huge tungsten bead and lots of wire to use as a point fly for czech nymphing. there are a lot of variations, but i still prefer the natural hare’s ear dubbing with gold ribbing. i prefer the “formerly known as” when the water color is a little off. sizes 12-18 a lot of people like to fish soft hackles during hatches or on sunny days, but i really like fishing them most any time. this is a simple takeoff of a fly that has become very popular of late, the steel worm or wire worm.
sizes 6-10. stoneflies are common in a lot of rivers, but i fish this on the “steak principle.” that is, i may have just stuffed myself with pizza but slide a bacon-wrapped filet in front of me and i’ll eat the thing. one of the great lessons the czech nymphing revolution has taught us is to keep in contact with your nymphs. it looks a lot like that natural worms that fish see all the time and there is something to be said for any fly that is tied with a condom. again, depending on the size or weight, sow bugs can be a point or a dropper fly. cranefly larvae are much more plentiful than most of us realize, so fish see them in many waters. the formally known as is a great prospecting pattern. great choices..i have most of these in my go too nymphs set..i have never seen a higa’s sos,although i do have some that look familiar and they work. a few of these flies are known to me and recommended to use here in the spokane river.
i favor a basic beadhead version, with a fat body and a sparse turn or two of partridge fluff extending from the abdomen. but this bug works wherever trout are feeding on midges, and if you tie it in a variety of wire colors, you’ll have midge hatches covered wherever you fish. i always carry a squadron of buggers and fish them solo or in tandem, with another bugger of a different color. this used to be my go-to mayfly imitation—before i opted for modern patterns, tied with synthetic materials—but there’s no doubt that it remains one of the best nymphs ever, and it still has a spot in my fly box. plus, this fly is easy to tie, so you can bang out a dozen in an hour and be ready for a full day on the water, tricking technical-tailwater trout.
in any case, just tie on a beadhead prince nymph and fish it along the bottom of a western trout stream. when matching the tiny bugs, you’ll have to fish it off a light leader, something in the 5x or 6x range, and you’ll not want to use a fast-action rod, or you’ll break off as many fish as you hook. ugly or not, you’d be crazy not to carry a few of these to the water every time you try for trout. i am convinced that some of the wariest trout in the world will give this old classic a fresh look. i prefer mine beadless, with a simple wind or two of peacock herl at the head, above a black thread body and wraps of silver wire. the smoke was the fastest bow in our test and tied for top marks in draw cycle.
