i want to start out with understanding how a typical home is setup, and then expand to a diy yourself level. i have a pool and would like to wire some basics, such as a fan and an outlet, but i don’t know how to determine how much i can add to my current setup (or how to do that). for plumbing, i have a smaller load of projects that i would like to accomplish, so something that just covers the basics. can you read a tape measure (its kind of a condescending question but i’ve met adults who cant)? both plumbing and electrical can be very rewarding but both can go badly very fast if you make a mistake. what do you specifically want to do with the plumbing and pool. if your looking for a good book that is a national standard check out the american national handbook if your in the us. it even has its own article in the nec (680), and it’s a long one.
u/buff4booty’s suggestion to check out the nec handbook is a good one. especially if you have plumbing in the outbuilding, it is a great place to practice with low risk to your home and safety. plumbing is a lot harder to just pick up– i am not an expert by any means but all my experience came from fixing broken stuff. when i needed to do my first suet welding i was still unsure of myself but having seen how everything works/doesn’t work really helped. some of the basics of plumbing i have learned over the years working with plumbers and being brother in law to one: 1/4in slope per foot drainage till you get larger than 4″, after that its 1/8th inch. improper venting is something a lot of diyers struggle with or ignore completely but its important. its much cheaper than sharkbite or other push fittings but they do have there place. dont oversize breakers, and finally yank on all connections to make sure they are snug as a bug in a rug.
